The Cheap Laptop Revolution
Once again, we are on the brink of a social revolution caused by the high tech catalyst. In the past, we have not been able to combine the power of computing and the benefits of mobility into a package that could be affordable to the masses. If you wanted low cost power, you had to stay at home with the desktop. If you wanted lost cost mobility, you had to resort to a cell phone with Internet access. But now, with plummeting laptop prices, both computing power and mobility will be accessible to all.
The same thing has happened with laptops, just shifted a few years. Up until now, it has been impossible to have computing power and mobility and mass availability combined; you could have any combination of two out of three, but never all three. As laptops became more sophisticated and more powerful with better quality, the prices remained nearly constant. The lower middle class couldn't easily capitalize on the technology and had to resort to doing computing on the home desktop.
Mobility for many was defined to be cell phones and hand held devices. Now, those technologies definitely have their places - the convenience of carrying a device in your purse or pocket that allows you to have connectivity is staggering - but those devices really do not have the full usability and flexibility that a laptop offers today.
The cheap laptop will enable more people to escape the chains of a desk, or of having to spend the evening entering data and filling out forms on the computer after spending a day out in the field. With the laptop now affordable to nearly everyone, the computing power can go with the worker to the job site. More power will be available to more people, offering more flexibility in how work is done.
The impact on society probably will not be fully understood for years to come, but the revolution of the cheap laptop will have the same magnitude of impact that such technologies of the past - televisions, mainframe computers of the 1960's, and cell phones - have had on society.
The benefits that this could have for blue collar industries could be staggering. A workers who has had to rely on phone calls to get or send information soon will be doing it on a cheap laptop that he takes with him to the job site. Everyone will have more access to better information at a faster rate. The world will be a better connected place.
Social media and E-commerce applications may feel the strain of trying to scale as "all the rest of us" join in the fun. That's not a bad thing - that will force an improvement on existing applications as well as encouraging application writers to think out of the box for innovative solutions. If you are considering starting up the next social networking or E-commerce venture, this might be a good time to get started! The future looks encouraging for mobile computing worldwide!
