Buying Used Laptops – Exposed

by Jed Jenson

Computers and laptops are almost considered as a necessity nowadays. There are no doubts that it really helps us to go on with some of our daily needs such as doing work, studying, and other leisure activities like internet surfing. Trends and features of these devices change quickly because of hardware and software upgrades. But only few people really need to cope with these changes. Most users only need basic laptop functionalities such as word processing. Thus, purchase of brand-new and top-of-the-line laptop is impractical. More often than not, most consumers opt in buying used laptops.

Several benefits can be gained in procuring used laptop compared with a new one. Leading on the list is cost. Brand-new laptops tend to have a fairly high value compared with its second-hand counterparts. Same unit can be acquired by consumers for a much reduced cost from its original selling price. Another benefit is that consumers have the power to choose and optimize laptop features by selecting a model that best suits their needs. Certain type of warranty can also be obtained in buying selected second-hand units. On the other hand, consumers should take precautions in selecting their items. Drawback of cheap laptops is to have defective and non-functioning items. Charges for laptop repairs can go up to a comparable cost with a brand-new unit. Succeeding discussions summarizes some pointers worth considering in acquiring used laptops.

Ask what is meant by used laptop. Obviously, used laptop refers to the old units previously owned by other person. But some sellers do extra efforts for repairing the laptops and do some replacement and upgrade on some of its parts to restore its good working condition. Such used laptop is known as refurbished laptops. Potential buyers should ponder on this because each of it has its own risk.

Know the required features and functionalities. Some buyer may favor one feature over the other. Some may want higher resolution, higher processor speed, and so forth. If the buyer is a student and needs basic word processing and better connectivity for internet surfing and data transfer, less priority can be put on resolution. But if the laptop will be used for gaming and videos, one should focus on resolution. Knowing the features needed is the key in making proper selection among used laptops offered in the market.

Look for the proper place to buy. There are three options that can be considered. Buyers can avail through online, through a local dealer, or through the manufacturer. Always do a background check on the credibility of the seller if online was chosen. Most online sites allow buyers to rate and comment on their seller and these information are always made available to the public, so do not forget to check on this. Dealers and manufacturers are much expensive than online sites, but they provide warranty that enables buyers to return their units and have it fixed.

Choose the desired model type. Some laptop models are specifically made for gaming purposes, some for home and office use, some for business use, and so forth. Since the minimum laptop characteristic needed was already identified, the type of laptop can now be decided. When the minimum characteristic needed is good picture and sound quality, gaming laptops should be aimed. When basic simple functionality is needed, laptops for home and office use can be the best choice.

Check for defects. Though internal defects can be difficult to check, it is advisable to at least check for physical defects. Minor problems such as loose hinge, shallow scratches, or unclear keyboard markings are negligible for some customer. But monitor defects should be taken seriously because repair for this might be very expensive.

Verify power connection and cooling system. Laptop users usually plug and unplug the power jack when charging the battery. This wears out most power ports and used laptop buyers should be aware of this. One way of checking power port problem is to connect the power cord to its corresponding port, then wiggle the connection to verify if power indicator goes on and off. If this happens, there is a power problem issue. Another thing to check is the cooling system. If the unit gets too hot in just a short span of time, cooling system might not be that good, and buyers can consider looking for another unit because excessive heat is one major problem in laptops.

Inspect the included accessories. Laptops accessories can include spare batteries and cords. Be sure to verify that each accessory is intended for the chosen laptop model.

Finally, seek for help. Try to gather first suggestions and ideas from someone with more experience in laptops. Consumers can also avail additional services to ensure that the unit they bought works properly.

Technically inclined persons find buying used laptop as fun, and getting quality units from it as a challenge. For general consumers, it is seen as a cheaper alternative of acquiring their desired laptop model. In any case, considering various checking and assessment before buying used laptops can result to acquiring the model suited to the needs of the buyer.
